shenandoah delight

in may 2005, we decided to move away from the hustle and bustle of washington dc and back to something more tranquil and relaxing. our little 5-acre plot on the western slope of the shenandoah mountains is all that we could have wanted. life is good in the hills.

like most blogs, mine will mostly be a way to share random thoughts, perspectives, peeves, and prognostications with friends, family, and anyone else who decides to drop by. i hope you enjoy it as much as i do. . . ~ron

i was born a navy brat and joined the navy myself in 1979. after spending 20 years as a naval cryptologist, i retired in 1999. now i am a computer security engineer for a mid-size government contractor in reston, va. i am very lucky to be married to the love of my life - cherie'( a.k.a. lolita), and we have 7 terrific kids! plus 7 terrific grandkids!

i attended garner senior high school in garner, nc (just outside raleigh) and the university of maryland (bs in 2000 and ms in 2004).

now that the kids are all grown and out of the house, i fill my time trying to keep tabs on them, which ain't always easy. they tend to be very busy and socially active. life could probably be better, but honestly, i don't know how . . . except living closer to all the kids would be nice :-)

epitome of stupidity #2

i have a long list of "epitome of stupidity" topics, but not enough time to post them all. however, this one is just so far out that i have to post it.

seattle seahawks fans have raised the bidding on ebay to $10,069 for a game day hotdog from the seahawks-panthers game on 1/22/2006. an enterprising fan planned the whole thing and took several pictures, including pics of the hotdog stand, menu board, and the scoreboard showing the score, to validate the dogs authenticity. she also has the receipt. after the game, she (stacey) took the dog home and stuck it in the freezer, then opened an ebay auction to sell it. they are only accepting bids from pre-approved buyers, so she is most likely going to collect on the sale.

there just aren't enough words to describe how ridiculous this is. the only redeeming value is that stacey has agreed to donate 15% of the highest bid to the Grant Wistrom (Children's Cancer) Foundation. way to go stacey :-)

i'm happy, ok not so much happy as less distraught, that the winning bid for the 10-day-old hotdog from the nfc championship game was ONLY $1800.

i don't know what happened to the $10,000 bid, but it disappeared.

well, got to go, i'm checking the freezer for that lasagna we stuffed in there 6 months ago. it should be worth 10 times what that stale hotdog brought in.
